2 Common Causes Of Air Conditioner Refrigerant Leaks

Posted by on Jan 30, 2017 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on 2 Common Causes Of Air Conditioner Refrigerant Leaks

A refrigerant leak is one of the worst things that can happen to an air conditioner. That’s because it will result in your AC having to work harder and harder to produce less and less cool air, all while leaking potentially dangerous refrigerant. If you would like to learn more about the sorts of things that can lead to a refrigerant leak, read on. This article will discuss two of the most common culprits behind this problem. Bad Schrader Valve If you have ever put air in the tires of an automobile or a bicycle, then you know exactly what a schrader valve is. Yet the purpose of a schrader valve in an air conditioner is not quite so obvious. Here its job is not to allow air into the system, but rather to keep the refrigerant from coming out, while simultaneously permitting an air conditioner technician to measure the system’s pressure. The problem here is that, over time, small rubber seals inside of the schrader valve begin to deteriorate, thus allowing refrigerant to leak out. Alternatively, the valve may allow refrigerant to leak out if it gets stuck in its depressed position. Fortunately, a replacement valve is rather inexpensive. An air conditioner technician will have a special tool that allows them to remove the bad valve and replace it with the new one–all without having to go through the trouble of removing all of the refrigerant from the air conditioner. Leaking Capillary Tube The capillary tube is a special component inside of your air conditioner’s condenser unit. Its purpose is to help maintain equal pressure across the entire refrigeration cycle. A capillary tube consists of a very thin, coiled copper tube. The delicate nature of this tube is what often leads to refrigerant leaks. As the result of vibrations coming from the condenser motor, the capillary tube often rubs either against itself or against a nearby part of the condenser. Should this go on long enough, friction will cause a small hole to form on the wall of the capillary tube. Unfortunately, capillary tube leaks can be difficult to diagnose. That’s because they require that a portion of the air conditioner be disassembled to gain access to the capillary tube. Holes in the capillary tube can often be repaired by soldering a larger piece of copper tubing over the damaged area. Yet if the damage is more severe or if the hole is located in a hard-to-reach part of the tube, it may be necessary to install a new capillary tube. Tips For Starting Your Flower Garden

Posted by on Nov 28, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Tips For Starting Your Flower Garden

There are few plants that can add more color and beauty to your yard than flowers. However, homeowners that have little experience with gardening can make some simple mistakes when it comes to arranging their flower beds. These mistakes can lead to problems for your flowers that may prevent them from reaching their full potential, but you may avoid these problems by being aware of these basic tips. Appreciate The Benefits Edging Can Provide Your Flower Beds When you are creating your flower beds, you should always include stone edging around the rim of the bed. While this may seem like it will provide purely cosmetic benefits to your garden, it can actually offer a number of practical benefits as well. For example, the edging will help the flower bed to retain water, and it will also help to stop erosion by slowing runoff as it flows over the flower bed. Place Mulch Around The Flowers Placing a couple of inches of mulch around the base of your flowers can also help them to better retain moisture, which can be very beneficial during the driest times of the year. However, water retention is not the only benefit that mulch can provide. It is also possible for the mulch to add nutrients to the soil near the flower roots as it decomposes. Lastly, mulch will also help to slow the growth of weeds as it will be more difficult for the weeds to take root in the mulch. Be Conscious Of The Height Of The Flowers When Arranging Them Flowers come in a wide assortment of types, and many of these types will have varying heights. It can be a common mistake for individuals to simply mix their flowers together without considering the height of these plants. However, if you make the mistake of plant short flowers near taller ones, you may inhibit the growth of the shorter flowers. This is because the taller ones may block out much of the sun. For this reason, you should always keep your flower bed organized by the height of the flowers. Getting the most out of your flower bed does not have to be difficult. By avoiding some potential oversights, you will be better able to help ensure that your flowers are as beautiful and healthy as possible. In particular, adding edging to your flower beds, appreciating the benefits provided by mulch and keeping the flowers organized by height may help you improve your gardening experience and results. For assistance, talk to a professional like Wild Geese...

Shade and protection from the elements is an important aspect when it comes to enjoying your patio. If you are shopping for a patio cover at a place like Aluminum  Builders Home Center, there are many options available. Choosing the right one depends upon several factors, including your design preference as well as your specific needs in a cover. The following guide can help you choose the perfect option. Solid covers A solid cover is a permanent part of construction, so it will always be erected over the patio. These are often constructed as an extension of the roof on attached patios. There are also metal covers available, that can be attached to the roof or used as a freestanding cover over a detached patio. They are the best choice if you need consistent protection from sun or rain. Solid covers are also a good choice for two story homes, since you can place a deck on top of the solid cover if it is constructed soundly. Retractable covers Most retractable covers are made of special outdoor canvas that is treated to be both waterproof and UV-resistant. Retractable covers are only suitable for attached patios, since they will need to be attached to the wall of the house. There are automatic varieties that retract or roll up with the push of a button, as well as manual types that you have to crank out yourself. These covers are an excellent option if you sometimes prefer an open patio and at other times need the benefit of shade or rain protection. Retractable covers to require some maintenance, including regular cleaning, to ensure that they don’t develop mildew. Pergolas A pergola is the best of both solid and retractable covers. They are especially well suited as a freestanding cover over a detached patio, although they can also look attractive next to the home. These covers have solid upright posts that support an open grid of timbers overhead. This allows dappled sunlight to shine down. If rain isn’t a concern, you can grow plants up and over the top of the pergola so that you have a living shade structure. Another option is to install a removable shade cloth over the pergola. These canvas cloths provide additional shade while also providing protection from light rain. Much like retractable covers, there are both automatic and manual versions of the shade cloth. Create One-Of-A-Kind Wedding Favors Using Ceramic Tiles

Posted by on Oct 5, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Create One-Of-A-Kind Wedding Favors Using Ceramic Tiles

It can be hard to find the perfect gifts to give to guests at your wedding, and taking the time to create gifts can often be a great way to save money on the overall cost of the gifts and show your guests how special they are to you at the same time. The guide that follows provides you with a great way to make one-of-a-kind coasters to give to your guests at your wedding. Purchase Pieces of Ceramic Tile Ceramic tile is great to use when making coasters because they are small, pre-cut, and durable. When choosing the tile that you want to use to make the coasters, don’t be afraid to choose fun, funky colors. You want the coasters to stand out and have a unique look when you are done. Choose the Design You Want to Create You then need to choose the design that you want to create on the tiles. Be sure that the design alludes to your wedding in some way. You could use your initials and the date that you are married or even a funny phrase that everyone knows you and your future spouse say to one another frequently. Create an Outline of the Design on the Tile Next, you need to consider what colors you want to use to make the design. You can create an outline for the design using washable markers. This allows you to erase the design if you are not happy with the way that it looks. Once you have drawn all of the designs onto the tiles, you will be ready to continue. Add Color to the Designs There is paint available at craft stores that is designed specifically for use on ceramics. Purchase the paints in the colors you plan to use. Create the outline for each design using the paint first. Allow the paint to dry overnight before continuing. Painting the outline first ensures that you have a border for the paint so that it does not spread anywhere that you do not want it to go. When the outline is dry, add the paint that you want to use to create the design you plan to create. Allow that paint to dry overnight, as well. The next day, spray all of the tiles with polyurethane gel to create a protective barrier over them. Once the gel has dried overnight as well, you can then add small felt disks to the back of each tile to ensure that they do not scratch any furniture when they are being used. You can wrap a bow around each one and give them as lovely gifts to the guests who attend your wedding. For more information, contact local professionals like Art Tile Co....

How To Remove Carpet

Posted by on Sep 14, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on How To Remove Carpet

Are you thinking about investing in new carpet? Are you trying to get the best estimate for your carpet installation? If so, there are a few things you can do to make your carpet installation even cheaper. Most carpet installers will include a fee for the removal of the existing carpet. This can be a time consuming process, so the cost can add up. This article explains how you can avoid paying for the removal of your old carpet and do it yourself with a few basic tools. This is actually a simple job that doesn’t require any power tools, but it can be physically exhausting. What You Need To remove the carpet and tack strips, you will definitely need a couple of hammers, a prybar, some large flat head screwdrivers and a utility knife. Removing the Carpet Removing the actual carpet is usually the easiest part of the job because it is only attached to the subfloor via the tack strips. You just need to find a nice edge from which you can pull up with a prybar or the claw end of a hammer. You can usually dig out the edge of your carpet under the baseboard. However, if you cannot find an edge, you can just make a slit in the middle of your carpet and pull up from there. Most likely, you will also need to use a utility knife to cut the carpet into smaller strips that you can haul away. You should definitely wear protective work gloves during this job because the edge of the carpet can be sharp. Removing the Tack Strips Once the carpet is removed, you will just have to remove the tack strips. You’ll need to use different techniques for removing the tack strips from different types of subfloors. To remove the tack strip from a wooden subfloor, you will need to nail the flat head screwdrivers underneath the wood and then pry up. However, to remove the strips from concrete subfloor, you just need a hammer. Strike the side of the tack strip, right where the nails are driven into the concrete. If you hit it firmly, it should be strong enough to knock the small nail out of the concrete. This might chunk up the concrete a bit, but it will not do enough to actually damage anything significant. If you have a large truck or van that you can use to easily haul your existing carpet away, this is an easy do-it-yourself job. With a couple of helpers, you can tear all of your carpet out within a few hours. Of course, you can use this to get a better estimate when shopping around for a carpet installer like Carpet...

Create Glittery Blinds For Your Daughter’s Room

Posted by on Aug 16, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Create Glittery Blinds For Your Daughter’s Room

If you have a daughter that loves everything to be glitzy and shimmery, consider updating her room by creating glittery blinds for her to have in her room. When the blinds are open, sunlight will bounce off of the glitter and cascade little flecks of light throughout the room and when they are closed they will give the room a shiny, shimmery look. The guide below walks you through the process of customizing your daughter’s blinds into glittery works of art. Choose the Glitter You Want to Use The first thing you need to do is to go to a craft store and find the glitter that you want to use for the project. Glitter is available in many different sizes and you need to be sure to use the right size to ensure that the glitter will actually stick to the blinds. Glitter that is too fine will absorb into the adhesive and not be as shimmery as you want it to be. Glitter that is too thick will fall off of the blinds when you open and close the. Look for a glitter that is about the size of a tip of a pencil. Choose a color of glitter that will match the colors that your daughter already has in the room. Choose the Blinds to Use Next, you need to choose the blinds that you want to use for the project. You do not want to use the cheap, thin aluminum or thin plastic blinds because they will break easily and may not be able to support the weight of the adhesive and the glitter. Choose faux-wood blinds or wood blinds for the project to ensure that they are able to support the weight you need them to be able to support. Rough Up the Slats Hold the blinds upright like you would hang them on the window. Determine how your daughter wants to close the blinds each time she closes them so that you can know which side will face into the room when closed and toward the ceiling when they are open so the light can hit them. Open the blinds as your daughter plans to open them and use sandpaper to scuff up the tops of the blinds so that the adhesive and glitter can stick well to them. Apply the Glitter Next, you need to use a paintbrush to paint on decoupage glue onto the top of one of the slats. Pour an ample amount of glitter over the entire slat and then turn it on its side and tap it lightly. All excess glitter will fall off. Make sure you are applying the glitter over a piece of newspaper so you do not make a huge mess and so that you can use the glitter again and again. Repeat the process until all of the slats are covered in glitter. Once done, allow the adhesive to dry overnight. Hang the blinds in your child’s window the same way you would any other set of blinds and allow your daughter to enjoy the new fancy look of her room. For more information, contact local professionals like Spotless Shade & Blind...

3 Features You Need To Include In Your New Home’s Design

Posted by on Jul 22, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on 3 Features You Need To Include In Your New Home’s Design

Investing in the construction of a new home allows you to incorporate features that are designed to make your life easier. Customizing your new home with features that are unique to your lifestyle can help your new space feel more like home. Here are three features that you need to include in your new home’s design to make it more functional (and unique) in the future. 1. Keyless Entry Keeping track of your house keys can be challenging. If more than one family member needs a key in order to access your home, you run the risk of these keys becoming lost and compromising the security of your new home. Statistics show that one in eight burglars gains access to a home by picking the lock or using a replica key. By making the choice to switch to a keyless entry system as you design your new construction, you can eliminate the security risks associated with traditional keys.  2. Automatic Blinds Having a lot of natural light streaming into your new living space can be beneficial, but when you want to reduce the amount of light in a room, it can be daunting to manually close many different blinds. Incorporating automatic blinds into the design of your new home can make it easier to control the ambiance in each room. Tying your blinds into an automated system that can be operated from a tablet or smartphone ensures that you won’t have to leave the comfort of your couch to reduce the glare on your television as you enjoy movie night with your family in the future. 3. Remote Management By planning to incorporate remote management features into your home, you can reduce your energy consumption and costs in the future. Designing your home so that the temperature, lighting, garage door, and even watering system can be controlled remotely through your tablet or smartphone allows you to carefully monitor your property at all times. You will never have to wonder if you left the lights on or forgot to shut the garage door, and you can control these features with the touch of a button when you make the choice to incorporate remote management into your home’s design during construction. Making your new construction uniquely your own doesn’t have to be challenging. Ensure that your new home will enhance your lifestyle by incorporating features like keyless entry, automatic blinds, and remote management into your design plan. Eliminating And Keeping Pests Away From Your Summer Vacation Cottage

Posted by on Jun 23, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Eliminating And Keeping Pests Away From Your Summer Vacation Cottage

Every year, you look forward to a long, relaxing getaway at your home away from home. For many reasons, including having your cottage locked up throughout the seasons, pests can take over in your absence and take homage in your vacation living space. If your infestation seems to be more than just one pest or critter, and you’re unsure of how widespread the issue is, it’s definitely time to call in the pros. Here are a few common pest issues and what an experienced pest control company can do to help. Outdoor Pests If your cottage has any type of opening or crack among walls, windows or doors, this allows for an easy entryway for many outdoor insects and pests to get inside. This includes: Mice and rats Centipedes Ants Crickets Flies and mosquitoes If you’re noticing a lot of black debris or feces on the floor, this is a good indication that mice or even rats have invaded your cottage. A residential pest control expert will check for chew marks, nests and structural damage that both mice and rats are capable of. Setting up traps is the most humane way to eliminate rodents. Centipedes, crickets and ants may be treated with a chemical compound that kills the existing pests. A spray formula that targets live flies, mosquitoes and their larvae may be recommended to get a severe infestation under control and prevent a future reoccurrence.    Winged Insects In vacant homes, sometimes wasps and bees can build a fairly large nest or hive that can ultimately be dangerous for humans to be around. In some cases, smaller wasp and bee hives can be safely moved and eliminated. Calling in a professional pest control company to identify what you’re dealing with is best. This allows for a safe relocation if necessary, rather than destroying a bee colony. Fabric Pests It’s always unfortunate to come home to a piece of furniture or mattress that has been completely destroyed by an insect infestation. Moths and powder post beetles can cause the most destruction. In some cases, termites can also infest the wooden base structure of your furniture and other areas of your home. Keeping them at bay involves hiring a professional termite control exterminator to destroy the life cycle of these insects. This will help prevent further damage and eliminate the bugs out of your cottage immediately. Bed Bugs And Fleas Bed bugs generally infest your bed, floorboards, carpeting and other areas in which they can gain human contact. If a previous tenant brought bed bugs or fleas into your cottage, they can be difficult to eradicate on your own. For bed bugs and severe flea infestations, you may have to replace your bed, linens, carpeting and some furniture—depending on the extent of the damage. Then you should follow up with a complete extermination to help kill bed bugs and get rid of fleas for good. No matter what type of critter, insect or pest problem you have, don’t hesitate to call exterminators today for a...

Three Tips For Preventing Your Emergency Generator’s Fuel Supply From Causing Breakdowns

Posted by on May 30, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Three Tips For Preventing Your Emergency Generator’s Fuel Supply From Causing Breakdowns

Although there are many maintenance issues that can potentially develop with your emergency generator, a unit that sits still for a long time between uses is particularly vulnerable to breakdowns caused by its fuel supply. Fortunately, in contrast to problems with an electric starter or another part that tends to break down through constant overuse, fuel is a relatively simple and easy resource to manage. Use these three tips to prevent your emergency generator’s fuel supply from causing breakdowns.  Always Treat Your Fuel With A Stabilizing Additive Before Storing It The longer your fuel containers stagnate on a neglected storage shelf, the more opportunities the chemical bonds in your fuel will have to break down. At a certain point, your fuel will be so degraded that your generator won’t be able to start with it at all. Even if you can just barely get your unit to start up, low quality fuel that sticks to essential parts inside your machine will cause clogging and eventual breakdowns. Especially if you can’t find a storage area for your fuel that’s completely dry, always add a stabilizing additive to your containers before leaving them alone for a long time. You only have to mix a tiny amount of it in to drastically increase the effective life of your fuel. Always Wait For Your Unit To Cool Down Completely Before Refueling If it’s already really hot out and you’re careless during the refueling process, a hot generator exterior could cause any fuel you spill to catch fire, causing damage to the machine and potentially yourself. So whenever your generator suddenly shuts off due to lack of fuel, always wait for a time and run your hand over the exterior before opening the fuel cap. Once you’ve finished with the refueling process, it also pays to give the surface area around the tank a quick swipe with a cleaning cloth. Clean Out Your Unit’s Carburetor Frequently A generator’s carburetor is what mixes fuel with air in preparation for going into the engine. The carburetor is a very common choke point for calcified fuel to build up in and cause a clog. This is mainly due to water particles mixed in the air stream that stick to the stubborn fuel spots. Even after you put your generator away, the water will still be there to make the potential problem worse. Therefore, to prevent any unpleasant surprises just when you need the unit most, it’s a good idea to remove the carburetor for cleaning before any extended storage period. Speak to a local generator supplier for additional...

Reduce Your Energy Costs With These Window Insulation Tips

Posted by on May 6, 2016 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Reduce Your Energy Costs With These Window Insulation Tips

Air conditioning costs usually make up the bulk of the bills that most homeowners have to shoulder. Since reducing the rate at which a home loses heat is an easy way of reducing the amount of work that an air conditioner has to do, insulating your windows is an effective way of slashing your energy costs. The following are tips that will come in handy in helping you do so. Sealing cracks and gaps Window cracks and gaps usually increase the burden on an air conditioning system not only because they provide openings through which already-heated air can escape, but also because they allow cold air to enter a home. Sealing them is thus an effective way of reducing the amount of work that your air conditioning system has to do in order to make your home comfortable. Caulking is an effective way of getting rid of small cracks on a window. Focus your caulk application on the areas where your window trims meet the wall and on areas around the window frames. And if your windows have larger or irregularly shaped cracks, using spray foam will give you the best results since the foam can expand after application and thus providing a more airtight seal. As for movable window parts, weatherstripping is the better choice. Use it to completely seal gaps such as the one that is usually around the area where the seal and the lower sash meet. You will have different choices when it comes to the type of weatherstripping to use for your windows. For small do-it-yourself projects, use open-cell foam and felt weatherstripping. This is because they are not only cheaper, but also easy to install. However, if you want something more durable, the use of metal weatherstripping is advisable because it is water resistant. Installing insulating window panels Insulating window panels are usually made of insulating material. Attaching these panels on your windows will provide not only an airtight window seal, but also an extra layer that heat has to go through before escaping your home. These panels are effective in helping to reduce the rate at which your home loses heat, something that goes a long way towards lightening the load on your air conditioning system. Using window films Window films are easy-to-install materials that are usually made of plastic. They are usually attached to the window frame with tape. To provide a better seal, a hair drier is usually used. Using a hair drier is also important because it helps to improve appearance of the window as it helps in the removal of any wrinkles that might form during installation.
